The Year 3s Are Learning About Phonemes and Graphemes
Our Year 3 class have been busy with our new Sound Waves program this term. Our focus each week is on a phoneme or sound and how different sounds can be represented with different letters or graphemes. Each week we explore different sounds and complete activities and online games to support our learning. Here are some comments about what we are doing and what we like about Spelling:
• I like spelling because it helps me learn how to write better. Indiana.
• I like the doing the segmenting tool online on Sound Waves. Josh.
• I learned the word ‘door’ has 2 sounds even though it has 4 letters. The word door is broken into the‘d’ sound and
then ‘oor’ which sounds like ‘or’. Charlie.
• Often when you’re segmenting words, if it has ‘tion’ at the end of the word, it is actually broken into different sounds like this: a-dd-i-ti-o-n. The ti make a ‘sh’ sound. Millie.
We have made great progress in developing our understanding of the sound-to-letter strategy, which acknowledges that sounds can be represented in more than one way.
