Fr Edward Welling
It is with great sadness that I inform you of the passing of our former parish priest Fr Eddie Welling He may be remembered by those with older children who may have been baptised by him. Fr Eddie came from the Netherlands after World War 2 with his parents and ten brothers and sisters! He was farewelled on Wednesday at Sacred Heart Church by his brother priests, family, friends and former parishioners. May he rest in peace.
Laudato Si Week
From 16-24 May, Australia celebrates Laudato Si Week. The Australian dates are different to those advertised internationally so we can celebrate National Sorry Day (May 26) and National Reconciliation Week (May 27-June 3), fully.
Laudato Si Week began to celebrate the first anniversary of the publishing of Pope Francis’ encyclical ‘Laudato Si’: on Care for Our Common Home. Since then, Laudato Si Week has given Catholics the opportunity to reflect on our progress in caring for our common home better, what we can improve and a chance to acknowledge the progress that has been made. This year’s theme is Hope for the Earth, Hope for Humanity. Pope Francis states clearly that caring for our common home needs not only more careful distribution of resources and equity in the way natural resources are used but a change of heart from each of us. Through his encyclical he implores all peoples, not just Catholics, to live more simply so that others may simply live. He believes that how we treat the Earth reflects how we treat each other. Caring for each other means caring for the home we share
To acknowledge Laudato Si Week I invite to watch Pope Francis’ film ‘The Letter’. It tells the story of six every day people who were invited to tell their story to the Pope. It is easy to watch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rps9bs85BII&t=125s
Laudato Si will also be the theme of the Staff retreat (which is a Pupil Free Day) on Friday 30 June.
Having watched the film, ‘The Letter’ may I leave you with this thought? ‘Once you know, you cannot look away.’
Blessings
