Dear Families
At Nativity, we know that a successful transition program can make a big difference to how comfortable your child will feel on their first day at school. Starting primary and secondary school is a big step for children and assisting them to transition to school successfully is important for their journey in continuing to be successful learners. For this reason, we offer transition visits for all our new students and are happy to tailor an individual transition program to suit your child.
We believe that connections with our local Kindergartens and Child Care Centres and our Catholic Secondary schools and other secondary schools are an important part of supporting our students to transition both to and beyond our school. Our staff visit local Kindergarten and Child Care Centres and the students who are enrolled to attend Nativity. For our students moving to Year 7, we also connect with Cabra, Sacred Heart and Cardjin Colleges through various opportunities to discuss and support our students.
Reception Transition – Nativity Stars Program
Our Nativity Stars Transition Program operates throughout Term 3 and 4 as an optional pre-school program offered to all children, who are enrolled in Reception at Nativity. This program is offered on a Friday morning.
Our program is facilitated by a teacher and a co-educator, the program is a mix of play-based activities and structured learning that helps children become familiar with school routines, class room settings, expectations and the wider school community. They also get the opportunity to explore and form new friendships with other children.
Transition to other year levels
When children commence in a year level other than Reception at the beginning of a school year, we work with families to provide transition sessions in Term 4 of the previous year. Working together to create a transition program that suits each individual child is important and we understand that settling into a new school may require extra visits. These transition sessions help children to become familiar with the school environment and also assist them with getting to know other students in their year level.
In the final transition session, the children will spend 45 minutes meeting their teacher and class for the following year.
Transition To Secondary Schools
Staff connect with all secondary schools where our students move on to, this is often via phone calls and meetings and secondary staff are invited to visit our students in their Nativity Space.
Our partnership with Cabra, Sacred Heart and Cardjin Colleges also enables opportunities for us to invite previous students back to our school to share information about the transition to Secondary Schools.
Any part of a student’s education is important and we look forward to supporting both students and families with transitions.
Kind regards
Melinda
