From The APL&T

Dear Families,

Students across the school continue to engage with our Global concept “One World.” All classes have engaged in learning beyond the classroom and have had the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of our world with the excursions that they have attended. Our teachers have shared what the students learning focus has been, we look forward to continuing to share the learning that is taking place across the school.

Early Years
Students have been engaging enthusiastically with our current inquiry topic, One World, which explores the distinctions between natural and artificial materials, as well as the contrast between wild environments and those that are urbanised or managed.
To launch the unit and conclude Term 1’s inquiry focus, students participated in an excursion to Lenswood Pick Your Own Apples. This experience served as a provocation, prompting inquiry into the challenges involved in managing natural environments. Key learning areas included water usage, the impact of weather conditions on farming, and crop yield variability.
As part of the visit, students each picked 2 kilograms of apples to take home, creating a meaningful and hands-on connection to their learning. Student reflections highlighted curiosity and empathy for those working in agricultural settings, with many expressing surprise, at the complexity of running a commercial orchard.
This unit aligns with the Australian Curriculum: Science, particularly in the areas of Earth and Space Sciences and Biological Sciences, and with Geography, as students investigate how environments are used and managed sustainably.

Year 3/4
Students attended their excursion as part of Lesson zero for our Global Concept One World. Through watching the Wheelchair Rugby, the students were exposed to a sport that involves not only people in wheelchairs but boys and girls to play together on the same team therefore creating one world and inclusion. The students really enjoyed understanding the sport as well as understanding the points system of how many points were allowed on the court at the one time for each team.

Year 5/6
Recently, 5/6 HB and BD attended an excursion to Parliament House. During this, students met with Erin Thompson (MP-Davenport)and engaged in a tour and mock debate. This was our week 0 provocation for our One World unit of work.
Emily shared – I liked how we got to have a debate inside Parliament House. I learnt how laws were passed.
Oli shared – I learnt how laws are passed through the different houses.

This week students will begin by unpacking the achievement standard – the roles and responsibilities of the 3 levels of government in Australia and will be working together as a whole class to come up with mutually agreed upon success criteria. Students will then be deciding how they would like to share their learning in a mode of their choice.

Premiers Reading Challenge
A reminder that if your child is participating in the reading challenge this year that R-2 students will read the books at school with the teachers completing the forms.

Students in Year 3-6 will need to complete the challenge at home, complete the form and return it to their class teacher as soon as they have read the required number of books.

I would like to leave you with the following thought…

“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” – Benjamin Franklin
