Year 5/6 Baldock/Davis Term 2 Update
Year 5/6 Baldock/Davis have had a very busy Term 2. We hope you enjoy our overview of Term 2.
Parliament House & MOD Museum
On Wednesday May 21st the Year 5/6 students went to the MOD museum and the South Australian Parliament. At the MOD museum, the students got to explore many different exhibits, exploring the theme of beginnings, endings & everything in between. Students loved doing everything from weaving, interacting with AI and experiencing smells from all sorts of occasions.
After the MOD Museum our class went to Parliament House. At the Parliament House, we were greeted by our local Member of Parliament, Erin Thompson, who gave us a tour of the South Australian Parliament. We first entered the House of Assembly and conducted a mock debate on whether homework should be banned. Some of us took on special roles such as Speaker, the Premier and the Opposition Leader. Of course, the vote was for homework to be banned. We then toured the Legislative Council and the Parliament Library.
We would like to thank Erin Thompson for hosting us, our parent helpers, Bianca Cotton, Lisa Podger and Kate Jeffery. A big thank you to Mrs Harrison for organising the excursion.
Mary showing courage artwork
In Religious Education we had to share how Mary showed courage through our artwork. There is a display of this artwork in the St Joseph building from both 5/6 classes. Below are some examples from Charlotte, Lily and Thomas.
Media Art
In Art this term, we are learning about Media Art. Media Arts are all around and influence us every day, even if we don’t realise it. Think about your favourite movie, podcast, YouTube channel, documentary, music clip, E-book, video game, magazine … they are all Media Arts!
Media Arts involves creating representations of the work and telling stories through communication technologies such as television, film, radio, video games, the internet and mobile media.
Our first Media Art task was to design a movie poster for one of our favourite movies. We learned about things to think about when designing a poster, including using light and dark shades to pull the viewer’s focus towards an image. We had to consider salience, which is the main feature for the poster, and choose either a central figure or large writing to be the salient image. We also had to make it colourful and visually appealing to an audience to make them want to see the movie. Here are some of our completed movie posters. We hope you enjoy them!
Photography
In art, we have been exploring black and white photography, and considering colour, contrast and composition. Students experimented with taking numerous photos and chose three images to present on Canva, with a colour and greyscale versions. We have also been looking at how lighting can affect an image. We have a small sample of our Black and White photos and lighting photography below.
Maths – Area
In Maths we have been exploring area in measurement. The Year 5s created a 1 squared metre (pictured below). Mr Baldock asked us to put our measuring skills and area knowledge to the test and work out how many square metres the PAC floor was and the stage. The answer to the closest square metre is 171 square metres for the PAC floor and 62 square metres for the PAC stage.
Technologies – Lego Prime
In Technologies we have been using the Lego Prime kits. Our theme has been invention. In one of our lessons, we had to create a hopper racer. Students had to make modifications to see if they could make the fastest hopper capable of moving from one side of the tape to the other. Here is an example below.
Assembly
We finished off our Assembly last week with a dance. It’s very easy to do, because there are only two dance moves, so what are you waiting for!
