What’s happening in 5/6 HB
5/6 Harrison/Baulderstone have started Term 4 off with a bang! We are straight into learning and are ready to take on our final term for 2025.
In English, students are reading and writing various poetry pieces, identifying the use of poetic devices and what recording what impact this has on the reader. Students are in the process of selecting a piece of poetry to read and analyse. They will be developing their oral speaking skills as they read this to the class. In the next few weeks, students are designing their own magazine that will feature various text types and images. Our Year 6’s will focus their magazine on their time at Nativity from Reception to Year 6, whilst our Year 5’s will be choosing to create a magazine on a topic of their choice.
In Mathematics, students have been learning about probability. We have been conducting our own statistical investigations and recognising that probability can be placed on a scale of 0 – 1. We have been building our mathematical skills by participating in daily reviews. This is done on a whiteboard so students can receive instant feedback, and everyone is participating in learning. The purpose of a daily review is to reinforce prior learning that has happened throughout the term and for this to stick in our long-term memory.
In Science, students have started the term off by exploring how condensation is caused. We used a glass, ice cubes and food colouring to explore how and why this may occur. Students designed their own experiment to explore how different locations may affect the evaporation of water in a dog bowl. We are moving into learning about reversible and irreversible changes. Our Health lessons will be giving students tools to support them with their mind-body connection. The will explore negative thinking traps and how our thoughts after an event can affect behaviour/consequences. Year 6 students will participate in lessons to support them in transitioning into High School.
Our Year 5/6 students have some exciting events coming up which include Camp, an excursion to Morialta Conservation Park, End of Year Mass, Graduation, Year 6 Fun Day and all students participating in Footsteps Dance lessons. Our students will also participate in Carols night this year, sharing the Nativity Story and songs they have chosen. We look forward to sharing these events with you this term!
