Why We Carry Out Assessments at School
Over the next few weeks, students across the school will be participating in a variety of assessments, including Progressive Achievement Tests; PAT Maths (PAT M) and PAT Reading (PAT R). The tests are similar to NAPLAN, in that they assess students in areas like Reading, Maths, and Spelling and Grammar.

These assessments are an important part of our approach to understanding each child’s learning progress.

Teachers already gather a wide range of information about students through classroom learning tasks, observations, and other forms of assessment. The PAT assessments provide additional, consistent data that helps us:
• Identify student strengths and areas for growth
• Plan targeted teaching and learning experiences
• Monitor progress over time, both the individual and school wide level
• Support transitions between year levels

Importantly, this data is not only used by your child’s current teacher—it also helps inform the planning and support provided by their teacher in 2026.

We appreciate your support as we carry out these assessments. They are one of the many tools we use to ensure every student receives the best possible learning experience. If you have any questions about your child’s learning please feel free to contact your class teacher.
