Mary MacKillop Museum Visit – Learning About Australia’s First Saint

Our Year 5 and Year 2 students recently enjoyed a wonderful and meaningful visit to the Mary MacKillop Museum, where they spent the day learning more about the life and legacy of Saint Mary MacKillop, Australia’s first saint and a special inspiration for us as a Josephite community.

Although the weather prevented us from completing the planned walking journey exploring places connected to Mary’s life, students were still able to spend rich and engaging time inside the Museum. They explored artefacts, stories, and displays that helped bring Mary MacKillop’s remarkable faith, courage, and commitment to education and justice to life.

A highlight of the day was listening to Sr Mary Ryan, who has been a Josephite Sister for 56 years. Sr Mary shared personal stories and insights about Mary MacKillop and the Josephite tradition, helping students deepen their understanding of what it means to live with faith, compassion, and service.

Throughout the visit, students reflected on one of Mary MacKillop’s most well-known quotes:

“Find happiness in making others happy.”

This message strongly connects with our school values and continues to guide the way we care for one another and our wider community.

The day concluded beautifully with students leading a prayerful liturgy in the Chapel, giving them time to reflect on what they had learned and how they can live out Mary MacKillop’s example in their own lives.

It was a special and memorable experience for all involved, strengthening our connection to our Josephite heritage and inspiring our students to continue living “in all things, love.” Thank you to the wonderful parents who assisted us on the day!
