What’s happening in 5/6HB

5/6 Harrison/Broad have started our term off with enthusiasm and some great learning. Our Year 6 students attended their Year 6 Retreat on Tuesday. The theme of this event was based on ‘Understanding is the Key to Justice.’ Throughout the day, students explored how understanding others leads to justice, compassion, and peace. The retreat began with a reflective letter of gratitude and a guided meditation, preparing students to engage thoughtfully in the day’s learning.

Across a series of interactive stations, students deepened their understanding of key social justice issues:
Poverty and disadvantage through an activity where they experienced making financial choices with limited resources
Racism and prejudice by analysing how words can impact others and the importance of respectful language
Justice in action, identifying how their school already supports others and proposing ways Year 6 students can lead change
Living like Jesus, by applying Gospel teachings to real-life situations and considering how they can act with compassion and fairness

In Mathematics, we have started to explore fractions of equivalence. Students created their own fraction walls and used this to visually locate fractions that were the same size. Students learnt how to place different fractions on a number line and compare fractions that were equivalent.

In Religious Education, students have been exploring the concept of Creeds and why they are important. They discovered that a creed is a shared statement of belief that brings people together. Students discussed how groups such as schools, teams, and faith communities share common beliefs and values, and how these help create a sense of identity and belonging. They also explored why we use creeds, including to stay united, teach important beliefs, and protect the core message of their faith.

In art this term students will be looking at street art and the meaning behind it. They will use this as inspiration to create their own piece of media street art. Please encourage them to look for street art when they are out and about.

This week, the Year 5/6’s were excited to participate in a Claymation Incursion. During this, students engaged in a workshop experience where they learnt how to bring miniature characters to life on screen using Stop Motion.
