5/6 Harrison & Broad – A Busy and Exciting Start to Term 3!

The students in 5/6 Harrison and 5/6 Broad have launched into Term 3 with enthusiasm, energy and a strong commitment to learning. There is a wonderful buzz around the classrooms as students begin preparing for our much-anticipated Grandparents’ Day Performance. Over the coming weeks, students will be developing their performance skills through rehearsals, creativity and teamwork as they work towards sharing a special celebration with our school community.

In English, students are exploring the procedural genre, learning to identify its purpose, structure and key language features. They are investigating where procedures are used in everyday life and developing their ability to communicate instructions clearly and effectively. As part of this learning, students will plan and deliver an oral presentation that teaches others how to complete a task using a logical sequence of steps. We are also continuing to strengthen our writing skills through The Writing Revolution, with a focus on coordinating conjunctions, subordinating conjunctions, the four sentence types and single-paragraph outlines.

In Mathematics, our focus has been on angles. Students have been learning how to measure, classify and compare angles and are applying their understanding to estimate and calculate unknown angles. Daily Review sessions continue to play an important role in our learning, helping students revisit previous concepts and build strong connections in their long-term memory. These regular practice opportunities are supporting students to develop confidence and fluency across a range of mathematical skills.

In Religious Education, students are exploring how God guides people to make loving and just choices. Through studying conscience and the Ten Commandments, students are developing their understanding of moral decision-making and how Christian teachings help people build positive relationships with God, themselves, others and creation. Students have investigated conscience as a God-given inner guide that helps people recognise right from wrong and have explored how it is shaped by family, friends, prayer, Scripture, Church teachings, personal experiences and the wider community. Through real-life moral dilemmas and thoughtful discussions, students are discovering how God’s grace helps people make choices that promote goodness, justice and healthy relationships.

This week, both Year 5/6 classes were fortunate to participate in an excursion to Warriparinga, where students deepened their understanding of Aboriginal culture and traditions. During an Indigenous cultural tour, students learned about the rich history and significance of the local area and had the opportunity to learn about Indigenous art symbols and designed a boomerang. It was a valuable and memorable experience that helped students further appreciate the knowledge, stories and traditions of First Nations peoples.
