Year 1/2W Blasts Off into Space!

Year 1/2W has made a rocketing start to the term with an exciting Science focus on space. Students have been enthusiastically exploring the wonders of the solar system, asking thoughtful questions and sharing their growing knowledge about the world beyond Earth.

Our space learning has also inspired creativity across the curriculum. In Design and Technology, students created colourful papier-mâché planets and stars. Hands-on experiences have helped students connect scientific ideas with art and design.

We were also fortunate to welcome Professor Jennifer Mortimer, a Chief Investigator with Plants for Space at the University of Adelaide. She spoke with the class about the exciting possibilities of growing plants aboard the International Space Station and, one day, on Mars. Year 1/ 2 students will participate in the national Mission Sprout STEM project, comparing seeds grown on earth to seeds that have been in space.

The excitement will continue at the end of the week when the class visits the Space Discovery Centre. Students are looking forward to extending their learning, discovering more about space exploration and seeing their classroom investigations come to life.

Our English focus for the beginning of the term is on poetry. Students have been listening to and writing their own poems and exploring personification, alliteration, onomatopoeia and rhyme. They have enjoyed playing with words and sounds and are growing in confidence as they share their poems aloud with their classmates.

Mathematics began with an investigation into positional language and directions. Students practiced using words such as left, right, forwards, backwards, next to and between to describe where objects are located. We also used Beebots to plot simple routes, programming them to travel from one point to another within the classroom. This hands-on learning has helped students build their understanding of location and movement while developing early coding and problem-solving skills.

ur HASS and Religious Education learning is guided by our Term 4 school-wide inquiry question, “How can we shape a better future tomorrow?” Students have been exploring the similarities and differences among world religions and cultures, developing curiosity, understanding and respect for the diverse ways people live and celebrate. Through learning about celebrations, food and shared traditions, we are breaking down barriers and recognising the goodness that connects us all when we work together to create a more inclusive future.
