Class News From 1/2W
This term, Year 1/2W has been busy exploring lots of new learning across the curriculum. The children have shown curiosity, creativity, and teamwork as they continue to grow in literacy, numeracy, and inquiry learning.
Our school-wide Global Concept for Term 3 was Environmental Stewardship. This theme flowed through HASS, Literacy, Visual Arts, and Religious Education, giving the children many chances to connect their learning in meaningful ways. As well as listening and responding to stories from the Dreamtime, students have explored the importance of Acknowledging Country and using The Writing Revolution (TWR) have developed their own statements and questions around First Nations themes.
A favourite part of our inquiry was learning about Aboriginal farming methods and the way Aboriginal communities cared for the land. The children were fascinated to discover how people lived sustainably and looked after natural resources. The native food tasting was a real highlight — there was lots of excitement (and a little bit of bravery!) as students tried kangaroo, native fruits, and traditional flavours. Many commented on how different and delicious the food tasted.
In Art, the children expressed their ideas through dot painting and rock painting inspired by Aboriginal traditions. They enjoyed using patterns and symbols to show their thinking about land, animals, and the environment, and were proud of the artworks they created.
Through all these experiences, the children have been thinking about Laudato Si: Caring for Our Common Home. They talked about how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples cared for the land and reflected on how we too have a responsibility to look after the world around us. Sustainability became a topic of many thoughtful class discussions, and it was wonderful to see students making connections between their learning and their own lives.
